Of late I had been enjoying my food at Asian5 and had been talking about it but then within a week I had three different people ask me if I had been to The Yellow Monkey at JBR. Of course I had heard of it and seen posts put up by fellow bloggers but it had never been in my choice list due to location – I don’t venture a lot into the Marina/ JBR neighbourhood.

So, when a friend who lives in JBR and I decided to catch up – we zeroed in on The Yellow Monkey. NOTE: My friend was one of the three people who recommended the restaurant in that week.

I walked in and was immediately drawn to the swinging tables and chairs – but with the chairs swinging and the table swinging – it was not the most practical for me (considering my feed did not touch the ground – yes! I am that short 😊). So when my friend arrived I moved to a more stable and normal table and sofa setting.

VEGETARIAN ALERT: My friend who is 100% vegetarian told me at The Yellow Monkey they use separate utensils for vegetarian cooking and also do not use fish oil in any of the veggie dishes. They stay very true to the ‘vegetarian ethos.

I started off with Thai Mojito – basically made with lemongrass, kaffir lime and soda water. Soothing when it came to cooling down in the Dubai heat.

For starters we tried the Edamame and Truffle Dumpling which was interesting in terms of taste.

In between we were given a complimentary chilli relish served on a smoking coconut shell along with rice crackers. Since it had fish oil, I was the only one who could devour it – and I did.

For mains I stuck with Thai Red Chicken Curry with rice – I had to as that is what this restaurant was bench marked for when I spoke highly about the Asian5 red curry. It was good, but I would have liked it a bit spicier – but then that is how I like my curry.

My friend ordered the Mock Meat sautéed with black pepper sauce and the Pad Thai – Vegetarian. The Pad Thai arrived but they had forgotten to tell the kitchen about the Mock Meat order – so there was a bit of a delay in that arriving – but honestly it was well worth the wait. My friend told me I had to try it – and so I did – and I actually loved it. I think the ‘mock meat’ was Tofu.  Sorry did not get a photo of either of these dishes.

If you live in and around JBR/ Marina, this Thai restaurant should definitely be on your restaurant list.
