FOOD TRAVELS: JAIPUR
Let’s be honest. There are certain types of holidays where all you want to do is ‘nothing’ – none of that touristy stuff of monuments, historical walks and of course those mandatory selfies. My recent trip to Jaipur was exactly one such holiday (had done the ‘touristy’ stuff on my previous trip to the city) where all I wanted to do was spend some quality time with my twin-friend (she’s known me for 30 years, so pretty much more than half my life and we share the same birthday 😊), eat and do the occasional shopping if the urge presented itself.
My twin-friend considers Jaipur home now (although I still think her heart is in Bombay) and happens to be a huge supporter of my blog and what I do. So, all things food is but naturally directly linked to me. She also signed us up for a food walk – but that will be a blog unto itself.
So let me share the few places in Jaipur where I got to eat at while my friend and I caught up on how life has taken us on many journeys but the one of friendship has remained constant with a few forks in the road, which ultimately always lead us back…
So sit back (its a bit longish although more pictorial) and enjoy!

I literally drove into Jaipur (from Jodhpur), dropped my bags at the house and off we went – first to satiate our appetite and then walk it off with some retail therapy. Anokhi Café offers healthy and tasty fresh food with an international flavour (don’t come here for any Indian or Rajasthani food).
Thai Green Curry
Chocolate Cake – my friend believes in the saying – Life is short. Eat dessert first – she did exactly that – she had half the cake before the food arrived and I ate the other half post my meal.. but then who am I to judge when it comes to chocolate!
Location: Anokhi Café, 2nd Floor, KK Square, C-11 Prithviraj Road, Jaipur, Rajasthan Tel: +91 141-400-7244 Open from 10AM to 7:30PM
THE JUICE SHOP
Quote: If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t.
You don’t realise how hot Jaipur can get in the early evenings (around 4ish) especially when you are being chauffeured around in an air-conditioned car. But step out to visit shops, and step back into the car a few times and the heat does take a toll. So I was asked if I wanted something refreshing… and it was just like someone had read my mind. So we stopped at The Juice Shop which serves 100% raw and plant based cold-pressed juices. I of course had no clue what to order, so after much deliberation I settled on a choice – unavailable. After a bit more mulling, I choose second choice only to realise that I would not be able to eat anything for at least 8 hours – and that was never going to happen with dinner time just over the horizon. Third time the charm. I had The Detox which comprised of Spirulina (if only I knew it was a type of algae before I said yes!), Kiwi, Kale, Cucumber, Green Apple and Mint. This was an absolutely healthy drink – even my body felt it.. but refreshing it was definitely not.
Location: The Juice Shop, J-2, Jamnalal Bajaj Marg, C Scheme, Ashok Nagar, Jaipur Tel: +91 141 4034141 Open from 8 AM – 11 PM
HOME CAFÉ BY MR. BEANS
Quote: I’d rather have a good food – lots and lots of different varieties of good foods – than search for something perfect.
We were too late for breakfast and too early for lunch and all we wanted to was eat. So, we went to Home Café by Mr. Beans. Turns out that Mr. Beans was one of the first cafés in Jaipur (started about 13 odd years ago) and as with anything new it became a popular hangout with the youngsters. Fast forward to 2017, they revamped it, added main courses to the menu and rebranded it, but retained the original name with ‘Home Café’ as a prelude.
Our choices here were totally messed up – a little bit of breakfast, a little bit of lunch and dessert in a glass…
Nutella & Coffee Delight (loved it enough to have two of them – totally guilt-free)
Waffles with Maple Syrup (but of course) and butter (but of course)
Grilled Chicken and chilli sausage
Very Very Cheese Macroni & Cheese
Location: Home Café by Mr. Beans, E414 Sardar Patel Marg, C Scheme, Ashok Nagar, Jaipur Tel: +91 141 222 3650 Open from 9.30 AM – 11.30 PM

My friend had been repeatedly saying that she wanted me to experience Tapri (translates as ‘small, temporary shed’) – the food, the ambiance and the quirkiness .. so on my last day in Jaipur – that is exactly where we went. Although it claims to be a ‘tea shop’ – and yes it does serve tea, it’s more than just that. You have the ever popular Maggi, Pani puris and Vada Pav – none of which we tried. I wanted to try something I wouldn’t get normally in Bombay, and I am glad I did.
Kala Channa Chat
Chottu Idli Platter
Location: Tapri, B4-E, 3rd Floor, Surana Jewelers, Opposite Central Park Gate No. 4, Prithviraj Road, C Scheme, Ashok Nagar, Jaipur Tel: +91 141 2360245 Open from 7:30 AM – 10:15 PM
Food is for eating, and good food is to be enjoyed and shared and I am so glad that I got to do this with my twin-friend – I couldn’t have asked for a better inside-out view of the ‘in’ food scene in Jaipur.
